When teaching any subject, you require a stimulus. The role of the teacher in the classroom is always to inspire and engage them. Often this requires challenging your students and allowing them to push the boundaries of their thinking.
The painting on the right, is one I produced as a stimulus for students to think of alternatives. The students had to bring in their favorite magazine and find a stimulus in it. Something that inspires, excites or challenges them. They then had to choose a way to represent it visually and reflect on the meaning portrayed by their work.
The shoe was my example to them. I chose a shoe, because of my love for fashion. It is tall, because of my desire to be taller. The shoe is fragmented because fashion is subjective, it could also subjectively represent my opinions of myself, which may be skewed. The color blue, is an attempt to calm the influences that society is trying to force upon me.

The one thing I love most about the arts, is their ability to compliment each other. During a Clay unit in my Middle School Art class, I decided to also combine music, performing and visual arts.
Students were placed in groups and assigned a fairy tale. They had to put on a puppet show version of the story by producing their own puppets and script.
They used clay to make the heads and brought in material scraps to make the costume. They were also able to create backdrops and soundtracks to enhance their performances.

As I mentioned on my Home Page, becoming a Middle School Art teacher truly pushed me creatively. I wanted to design a art curriculum that would evoke a passion for art. Here is a breakdown of what we explored.
- Sketching basics
We explored various techniques of creating texture and shadows. We began with sketching the different part of the face, then moved on to the whole face and then expanded it to the whole body. This also allowed use to explore proportions.
- Painting with acrylics
We first learned about complimenting colors and blending techniques. A song was used as a stimulus for their subject matter and the had to either represent the lyrics or rhythm or mood of it on the canvas.
We then explored creating textures. We collected various objects or materials that could alongside the paint to create something interesting and three dimensional. The students were allowed to chose their own subject matter.
As it is important to study other artists within your culture (and others) we did a study of Sylvia Siddell. The students made use of her techniques and style to produce a final piece.

As a Drama teacher I am fortunate to be involved in many school productions. Productions are a great opportunity for students to get involved in the whole process. We have auditions for roles which engages the performers. We have students who work as technicians, gaining valuable experience in the use of sound, lighting and stage management. Of course, costume, stage and prop design are a huge part of productions. With my love of visual arts, working on the design aspect is always one of my favorite roles. Students get to help out in the making of props and painting of sets. Below is a is a backdrop that was painted with the assistance of the students.
