Yr.9 Art
Along with being a homeroom teacher at Kingsway College in New Zealand, I was also the Yr. 9 Art teacher. Students will need to refine their subject choices in Yr.10, so it is important to provide them with a broad experience of arts.
The curriculum I designed provided them with an overview of skills in a range of arts.

Sketching
The students first explored with different techniques of shading. We used an apple as our subject and experimented drawing it with the different shading methods.
We then worked on using those skills for sketching faces and people. We first practiced drawing individual parts of the face from different angles. We learned some of the general rules about how to line up the different parts of the face and they used this practice to try and sketch a partners' face.
Students then learned about body proportions. Again, we looked at the average sizes and proportions of how the body is put together and how to use the head as the basis for proportioning the rest of the body.

Painting
Mixed Media
We explored the use of different textures in paintings. Students collected different kinds of materials like buttons, string, card etc. We used a song as our stimulus. While listening to the song, students had to write down words or make sketches of what they were experiencing through the lyrics or melody. They then planned their final work, thinking of ways to incorporate their different textures.
Artist study
We looked at Sylvia Sidell, a well known artist in New Zealand. She has a very interesting and slightly abstract style. Using inspiration from her style, aesthetic and techniques, the students produced their own version of art that would relate to her aesthetic.

Students were shown some of the basic skills of working with clay. They had to write an adapted fairy tale script that they could perform as a puppet show. They first sketched plans of the face and costume, by analyzing their individual character. They then used clay to make the heads of the puppets using their hands, some clay tools and paint. Students brought materials from home and then created costumes for their puppets. The groups rehearsed their show and we performed to some of the lower levels.
