reflection against assessment criteria
Demonstration of technical and visual skills – materials, techniques, observational skills, visual awareness, design and compositional skills
With each part of Painting 2 I have expanded my research when looking into contemporary artists which has helped me to discover or combine new methods. As I was fortunate to see the work of the artists I used in Part 4 and 5 first hand, it also provided me with a greater sense of how I might approach similar techniques. Granted, these are skill that I am still developing, however, it is possible to see a progression in how I approach subject matter and incorporate painting techniques. In particular, my use of texture on the canvas is already showing more finesse. My continued practice of using more dynamic and interpretive brush strokes also continues to be fine tuned. I believe that working on a larger scale and using more focused compositions has aided in this.
Quality of outcome – content, application of knowledge, presentation of work in a coherent manner, discernment, conceptualisation of thoughts, communication of ideas
From Part 3 I realized that having a potential theme or message helps to create a sense of cohesion and purpose when creating. I noticed through my research and chosen artists that my fascination lies greatly with the human figure, especially our identity and how that is tied to our looks and emotions. By looking at the works of others and trying to refine what I want my work to achieve, it has allowed me to create pieces that communicate better. I have especially paid attention to how the choice of colours impact the way a viewer might interpret a piece.
Demonstration of creativity – imagination, experimentation, invention, development of a personal voice
Though I have my set of artists who are having a great impact on my creative process, they only serve as inspiration. The pieces I create are still very personal and rooted within my own abilities and experimentation. My experiments in using watercolour techniques with oils is good evidence of this. The way I have taken inspiration form Palacios to incorporate texture through other materials also show my ability to adapt and personalize techniques.
Context – reflection, research, critical thinking
I try to be thoughtful when choosing a composition, though his is not always easy. I tend to work from images and finding the compositions you want is often difficult. This is why many of my pieces are either of myself or my husband as I am able to manipulate the figure accordingly. I reflect on my creation process for all pieces which allows me to be considerate the next time I create, this is especially evident when thinking about colour choices and application. As for my research, it is evident that I value looking up and observing the works of others. Where possible, reading additional articles or viewing videos that show their creative process is even more valuable.
